This festival is driven by the community of San Marcos, Texas. KTSW, Texas States college radio station, puts this event on yearly, with the help of local sponsor funding. Due to community involvement that goes into this project, it has been awarded for “Best Community Involvement.”
Mr. Fest is San Marcos’ version of South by Southwest, it is a bunch of local acts gathered up by KTSW to perform. It takes place at a variety of bars downtown and best of all it’s free! Donations will be taken at every venue and go to the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center.
Not only does this festival bring the community together, it also shows off this small town’s creative side. I was transplanted to this dreamy, river city from Austin, almost two years ago. I have been blown away about the creativity emerging from this city.

I attended the Mr. Fest kick-off event at Stonewall. The headlining bands were the Two Lips, the Halfways, and Otis the Destroyer. All the bands featured at least one female musician, except for Otis.

If you missed Mr. Fest don’t fret since most of these bands are local you might be able to catch them soon.
